Illegal to Say, "Gay."
Tennessee has passed a law making the words, "gay," and, "homosexual," illegal to say in its schools, not to mention speaking of it, period. The vote went through at 6-3, the three opposing votes coming from democrats. Here is the article.So what do you think? Will this bill be allowed to stand? I say, no way. It's in conflict with the Constitution, which of course, is its biggest problem. One could argue that this will benefit kids who are bullied due to sexual preference or just the thought of others that they are gay, but hey, that argument really is bullshit. Overall, this is a bad thing. It's just another attempt to bring further progress towards equality to a halt (in Tennessee) and further alienate us from the rest of society. Pathetic.
What say you?

I listen to the old radio show station on satellite radio xm. They say gay a lot, but it had an entire different meaning 50 years ago.
what if they use the word "gay" to mean happy? What if they are talking about their favorite NBA player Rudy Gay, who happens to play in Memphis, TN.
Banning kids from saying these words in school makes no difference. Even in school, kids cant be monitered what they say all day! End of the day, kids will say what they wanna say.
@Margo73 - That's true. Kids will definitely say what they want, but in this case, teachers are not permitted to even speak of the issue. So if there's a gay kid needing guidance, for instance, the teacher will be unable to give that guidance lawfully.
@godfatherofgreenbay - I'm not sure how that would play out. Will be interesting to see how this all goes if it's allowed to stand.
@Ricardo98 - Yeah, I imagine so. My little brother says "gay" all the time. Something is always gay. Someone is always a fag or fagot. I never say anything to him because I know he probably isn't meaning it as an insult to us, deep down, but it's crazy. Kids use it as an insult, and now, this law will just reinforce their thoughts. If being gay is so bad we should not even say it in schools, surely gay people are the epitome of evil.
If it passes, kids who are opposed should organize and have groups getting together and singing the theme from "The Flintstones" in the halls in school.
that is so wrong... the schools are trying so hard to be politically correct that they are turning our kids into opinionless robots.. it will never fly in court.
What was the motivation behind this?
I doubt that the bill will pass the state legislature. I'm sure that even the Republican state congressmen that it'd make the state the laughing stock of the country.
@TheSchizoidMan - ROFL I agree!
@cyclemania - Very wrong, indeed! I predict it gets shot down as well. This can't possibly stand.
@Axis_of_Doom - I'm not sure, really. I need to look into it further. I just saw the story on FB and read through the article, then ran off to my mom's. I'm going to check into it, though. If you get any info, let me know!
@Celestial_Teapot - Yeah, I agree. It just amazes me that they even attempt such things. Surely it'll be shot down. I live in KY and wouldn't mind moving to TN at some point, to be at least a state away from my family LOL, but I wish such things wouldn't happen as this ridiculous bill. It'll change, I believe. It's too outrageous to stay in effect.
Hopefully they won't do any reading aloud in class and come across the word in a book :P
That is totally ridiculous!!!! It sounds like they are trying to force silence regarding homosexuality to "make it go away" or pretend it doesn't exist when they should be allowing students to speak openly. My youngest son's high school actually formed a group for students last year to promote tolerance for students with different sexuality, religion, race, etc and since then, I have seen many students "come out". Some of them are too afraid to tell their parents and others who have, aren't supported by their parents so this group gives them a place to know they are accepted. Last week his school promoted and participated in the Day of Silence and it was a huge success! He said most of the students wore red (not sure why red was the chosen color) and others had their mouths covered with a piece of duct tape most of the day (except to eat of course!). I wonder how many of these gay kids would have committed suicide by now without the support of their peers. There will always be people who discriminate but forcing silence encourages ignorance and hatred. Glad we don't live in Tennessee.
What the hell/ That's ridiculous.
@ReeserTheShadow - I know, right? Insane.
@kmwilly - Wow! Awesome thing your son helped organize! Kudos to him for that! You're right. For many kids, all they can really count on is the support of classmates, and even teachers. To put a bill like this into effect only alienates them further and makes their existence more difficult. It's already hard enough without foolishness like this. I'm also glad I don't live in TN. I mean, I'd like living there, I think, and I have felt it's where I'd move after leaving here, but blah. If they're passing laws like this, I wonder how long it will take them to recognize same-sex marriages? :S
@californiagal - Agreed!
