  • How?

Do any of you know how I can transfer all my media player files (songs) from my old laptop (Vista) to my new one?  What's the easiest way to do this?  I have a ton of music on there, and I'd hate to have to download all those songs again to this one.  Can it be done without the use of a memory stick or disc?

I know it's possible to set up a connection on each computer (Ad hoc, maybe?) through which two computers can share files, but I'm unfamiliar with this method, how it works, etc.  I tried it once, and just when I thought I had it figured out, no.  I was wrong.  If I absolutely have to, I could put all those I love the most on a memory card and add them that way.  I just wonder if there's an easier way, like through the shared connection?

    Thanks in advance!

Been a while since I did anything like this directly between two Windows computers, so I don't remember the procedure, but there are ways to connect two Windows computers and enable file sharing between them.  A search on "vista file sharing" (without the quotation marks) will give you some tutorials, such as this one:

Start > All Programs >Accessories > System Tools >  Files & Settings Transfer Wizard (It might be called something else in Vista and Windows 7).

You can copy all of your files and settings, or just files, or some of the files. The utility copies everything to one big file to wherever you choose.  It is a lot easier if both computers are connected to the same network, then you can just copy that big file to the new computer and reverse the process.  You can also copy to DVDs or CDs or a USB drive.

When you run this, it asks if this is your old or new computer.  If you have the same profile name (login name) no problem, otherwise you will have to log in as administrator and copy the profile to your new name.

I just did this for one of my users that got a new laptop.  He had tons of files, photos and music.  Going from Vista to Windows 7.  It worked perfectly, I copied to a file server and then back to the new laptop.  If you copy settings, it will even have the same colors as your old computer.

If the two computers are on the same network, Vista and Windows 7 automatically have shared folders, just set the file transfer wizard to save to the opposite computer's shared folder, then use that folder to get the files back.

In addition, you can just make a new folder and share it by right clicking and selecting sharing, then turn sharing on with rights to anyone.

@Ricardo98 - Awesome!  Thanks so much!  I do have the same login, so should make it easier.  :)  This helps so much!
