Horrific!
Here in my neck of the woods there are a great many black bears lurking around. They've been known to tear into people's trash outside, but other than that, they have never really been a problem. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore, however. This evening while I was at my parents' house, dad started talking about a rather large bear that's been hanging around my cousin's house, just down the road. Apparently, her neighbor found her dog dead with the whole back end of it missing, eaten! I nearly died when I heard this, especially since a huge black bear was seen walking up our road here recently. It's hanging around, too! My dad and brother said there were tracks everywhere near the ATV trails a short distance past my house. Maybe it's a different one, though. That would be fabulous (note sarcasm) since it would mean there are more than one lurking around, looking for dogs to eat!I thought black bears were herbivores, but dad told me they will eat just about anything, including meat. That makes sense. I mean, they eat fish, right? I have a bad habit of opening up the back door when I have a small amount of scrap food left over from a meal and just throwing it toward the mountain back there. Not a good idea, I think. I definitely don't want a big ass bear realizing that and coming back for more. I don't want Lulu to be eaten either! I thought bears were scared of dogs? Maybe not, or at least, not all of them. I guess if they're hungry enough, a small dog would be an easy snack. What's worse is that Lulu is a beagle dog. This means when she gets out, she sometimes likes to roam around in the woods tracking the scent of other animals...rabbits, I suppose. She isn't happy staying inside all the time, especially since she's spent a good deal of time outdoors. I sincerely hope nothing eats her. I can't even imagine how mortified the person must have been to find his/her dog that way. If they have kids, I really hope they didn't find it.
I wish they'd keep eating garbage and leave the pets alone. Crazy! Crazy scary, that is.

Bears are the ultimate omnivores 'round here. Well, except for us, I guess.
In the wild, they'll usually leave you alone as long as you make enough noise to let them know you're around. It's kind of weird how some bears will get accustomed to humans in suburban areas, though.
@democrab - True that. I saw one about a year ago while I was house sitting for my aunt. He came off the mountain to a flat where an old truck was sitting and climbed into the back of it. Later, he got out and walked around, stood on his hind legs and closed the open truck door! I watched him for a long time, and my sister and brother in law even came to see. We were probably 50ft from it and it didn't even care. It just done it's thing.
Yikes...here we just have coyotes and what seems to be a pack of feral dogs that've been roaming around since at least back in November...
